Huong Hoa district is a mountainous frontier on the west of Quang Tri province . The north side of this area is bordered by Quang Binh province , south and west by Lao People’s Republic Democratic , the east by Gio Linh , Vinh Linh and Đakrông .
The district has 22 administrative units including 20 communes and 02 towns ( Khe Sanh and Lao Bao ) ( among which there are 13 communes with special difficulties; 11 communes adjoining with Laos) Besides, Lao Bao international border gate located in Huong Hoa is on the Highway 9 axis connecting the area with the neighboring countries : Laos , Thailand , Myanmar . The border between Huong Hoa district and Laos is about 156km long which is adjoining three communes of Laos. The natural areas of Huong Hoa is of1150,86 kilometres . Until the end of 2013 , the number of residents was 82 thousand people . There are 3 ethnic groups mainly living in the area : Pa Ko, Van Kieu and Kinh
Huong Hoa mountainous terrain is greatly diverse. Mountain and rivers are alternately distributed,which is forming complex terrain that rivers and streams are derived from high mountain. Climate represents the typical features of tropical climate - monsoon, which is hot and humid all year round. The annual average temperature is 22 degrees Celsius and the average precipitation is 2262 mm / year. Huong Hoa’s climate can be divided into 3 different sub-climates : the East of Truong Son subregion climate( including the communes on the north of the district : Huong Lap, Huong Viet, Huong Son, Huong Linh ). This area bears the most significant effect of thenortheast monsoon tropics. Heat level increases considerably during hot temperatures and under the influence of the southwest monsoon wind, which lead to the fact that the average annual temperature is relatively high (24.9 degrees C). Subregion transitional climate can be observed in other communes , like : Huong Phung, Huong Tan, Tan Hop, Tan Lien ,Tan Lap, Huc, Khe Sanh town).
